Top 10 Best Engines List - Audi FSI Engines Acquire Two Places.

Yet another honor for the great auto maker Audi. Its two FSI engines acquire two positions in the "Top 10 Best Engines" category nominated by the editors of Ward's Auto World. The awards will be awarded during the North American International Auto Show at Detroit on January 13th 2010.

The two Audi FSI engines shortlisted are turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0 TFSI engine with the A4, and supercharged six cylinder 3.0 TFSI engine for the sporty upgrade S4 model.

For the purpose of nomination, six editors of Ward's Automotive World tested 34 engines from 13 different car manufacturers. This year the focus was how these engines are designed to give higher fuel economy with lower emissions without affecting the performance as a whole.

The engines were judged during driving cycles in Detroit where the judges assessed and assigned score to each engine on the basis of horsepower, torque, refinement, technical relevance and comparative data.

Ward’s AutoWorld Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter said.

“Auto makers are using innovative designs and advanced technology to boost horsepower and torque while downsizing engines and increasing efficiency.”

This is not the first time that the Audi engine is ranked with such a high esteem. In fact the Audi engines have been on the "Top 10 Engines" list for the last consecutive six years and 8 times for the last 10 years. Audi is the first car company to sell 100% of its gasoline engines with FSI direct injection technology, starting with model year 2010. The Audi S4 sedan, new for 2010, ushered in a new era of downsizing while enhancing performance and handling over the previous generation 2008 sedan model.

The eligibility criteria for the competition was to be available in a regular-production U.S.-specification model on sale no later than first-quarter 2010, in a vehicle priced no more than $54,000, a price cap indexed to the average cost of a new vehicle.

Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America said:

“Audi fuel-efficient powertrain technologies excel at delivering exceptional driving performance with reduced environmental impact. The well-rounded approach the brand is undertaking will keep Audi in a leading position for the foreseeable future.”

MTM Audi TT-RS

German tuner MTM has taken their power packed MTM Audi TT RS to the Nardo circuit in Italy, as they wanted to see how fast it can go.

The MTM Audi TT RS is powered by the standard 2.5-liter TFSI engine that now has been upgraded to output 472 bhp (347 kW) at 7.000 rpm and an untold amount of torque.

This 472 bhp MTM Audi TT RS can rocket from 0 to 100 Km/h in 3.9 seconds, and as we've already mention its top speed is 312 Km/h achieved at Nardon while using 20 inch bimoto wheels wrapped in Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres.

The price for the engine upgrade is 14.500€. If you will also opt for the 20-inch bimoto forged rims and the 15-inch brakes with eight-piston calipers you will have to pay an extra 9.973 €. Tuner’s next stop? A TT-rS that will develop 500 HP!

MTM TT RS: With 472 bhp faster than 310 km/h

  • Audi refiner MTM drives 312 km/h with the TTRS in Nardo
  • Sophisticated technique to ensure best driving values
  • Complete package including wheels and brakes

How much engine performance do you need to break 300 km/h? The ones who think that this needs more than 500 bhp will learn that this is not correct. The TTRS with 472 bhp by MTM from Wettstetten / Ingolstadt was GPS measured to be 312 km/h at test runs on the Nardo highspeed track in Italy at the beginning of September 2010. For many other tuners a hard nut to crack despite of increased efficiency.

"It's not decisive what we measure on the dynamometer but how many bhp you get on the road" says Roland Mayer, owner and Head of the technical Department of MTM. The right master plan has a bigger effect on driving dynamics, acceleration times and maximum speed than the search for a maximum in performance values.

In the case of the MTM TTRS this means: modification of the control unit, MTM turbo charger and a complete new MTM exhaust system from turbo.

The result: 472 bhp (347 kW) with 7.000 rpm/min, a 0-100 km/h time of just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 312 km/h - driven in Nardo with Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres on 20-inch bimoto wheels.

The MTM TTRS with 472 bhp doesn't has to fear the competition of other tuners, who are still fighting with 300 km/h and can't reduce 0-100 km/h time under 4.0 seconds despite a plus of 30 bhp.

MTM is one of the leading and at the same time the fastest of all Audi refiners worldwide. Within the last years engineers from Wettstetten showed best values:

MTM RS6 R with a top speed of 344,2 km/h is the fastest station wagon in the world. A MTM customer drove this record in Nardo in 2009. Moreover the fastest Bentley GPS measured 331 km/h in 2008 is from Roland Mayers workshop.

The TT Bimoto with two engines set as well a new record by driving 393,6 km/h in Papenburg in 2007. Today the Bimoto is still holding the track record for street-legal cars in Nardo driven by Florian Gruber. Nardo test drives under extreme conditions are an important part of MTM development work. Outside temperature was temporary at 35 degrees.

The costs for the upgrade from 380 to 472 bhp are about 14.500 € incl. tax and installation. The price for 20-inch bimoto forged rims, 15-inch brakes with eight-piston calipers (front axle) is 9.973 € incl. tax and installation.

Right now MTM is working on an over 500 bhp version.

Audi e-Tron Spyder

autostream.blogspot.com

In Internet appears first sketches of a new electromobile from Audi which will be shown in Paris. It will be already the third similar concept from Audi, presented lately.

The main difference of the Parisian electromobile consists in absence of a roof – for this reason the car receive name Audi e-Tron Spyder. Apparently, the Spyder will be constructed on a basis concept e-Tron, which was shown in the beginning of the year on a showroom in Detroit. That car was equipped with two electromotors total capacity of 201 h.p. that allowed to be dispersed from 0-100 km/h for 5,9 sec. Thus, according to representatives of Audi, the coupe e-Tron was capable to pass without additional charge 250 km of way that for an electromobile quite decent distance. To recharge the car, as always in such cases, is possible as from the usual socket connection (it will demand several hours), and from special installation. Last will allow to fill the car less than in an hour.

It is interesting that heads of Audi already said that they prepare to adjust a batch production e-Tron in 2012. However, it is planned to exhaust only 1000 electric super cars.

Leaks: Audi E-tron Spyder Concept

The German car maker Audi is planning a fifth E-tron model, an Audi E-tron Spyder. The car is expected to be an evolution of the E-tron system and previews the electric version of the upcoming convertible version of the R4 sports car.

This is vastly different when compared to the original e-Tron concept. The Audi R8 e-Tron was shown off a year ago with four electric motors combining for 230 kW (313 hp) and up to 4,500Nm of torque. With that massive figure, the car cruised to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds en route to a 200 km/h top speed. Its range of 248 kilometers came from the 213kg lithium-ion battery pack, which required up to eight hours recharge time on a 220V outlet.

The e-Tron Spyder might use the same technology found on the e-Tron Detroit Show car, which was powered by two electric motors delivering a total output of 204hp (150kW) and 2,650Nm (1954.54lb-ft). With these numbers, the car can accelerate 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in just 5.9 seconds while the sprint from 60 to 120km/h (37.28 – 74.56mph) is achieved in a mere 5.1 seconds.

Featuring a wraparound windscreen and no roof whatsoever, making it a permanent convertible, the R4 Spyder gets an identical front end to the fixed-roof e-tron, while at the back the bodywork surrounding the rear lights is finished in black.

The Audi e-tron Spyder is most likely based on the company's space-frame aluminium chassis, with two electric motors sending 204 HP to the wheels, and a production version should debut around 2012.

HS Motorsport Audi S5 Cabrio

The German tuner HS Motorsport has unveiled a new performance package for the Audi S5 Convertible.

HS Motorsport is on the same page as was CarGraphic when they skipped over making any exterior modifications to the already exquisite ride. Instead, their focus was aimed at the engine’s output. This focus produced a total of 375hp (up from a total of 333 HP) and 525 NM of torque (up from 440 NM of torque). HS Motorsport also removed the top speed limiter so the S5 will now hit a top speed of 180mph (the standard model was able to hit a top speed of 155 mph).

Wheel discs at the front axle in 9×21 inch with 255/30ZR21 tyres and in 10,5×21 inch with 295/25ZR21 tyres at the rear axle are produced by Cargraphic also. Use of Bilstein thread suspension B16 PSS10 lowers the vehicle. Upon request a brake system from Brembo with double 380×32mm brake discs and six-piston monoblock saddles for the front axle can be installed.

On demand – and at this performance absolutely advisable – a brake system from Brembo with double 380×32 mm brake disks and 6-piston monoblock saddle for the front axle can be installed.

HS Motorsport - Audi S5 Cabrio -> The Perfectionized Perfection

The customers fairly expect over and over again something extraordinary from the HS Motorsport company from Eching, located near Munich, the more so the perfection for a valuable client is the highest precept for Bavaria’s tuner. This time Audi S5 must be exposed to intensive care of the team from Eching.

Strictly speaking, the external look of the cabriolet from Ingolstadt doesn’t need any upgrades. Therefore, the crew begins with the engine output increase which is not visible at first glance. This results in the fact that substantial 375 HP instead of standard 333 HP are now waiting for calling. The maximum torque shows 525 Nm in comparison to initial 440 Nm, which is now blasting the crankshaft without mercy. Increasing the limit of Vmax to the new value of 290 km/h is just a logical way at such performance.

Nevertheless, modifications are visible now! An exhaust silencer from Cargraphic with four round inclined rolled-in 89 mm exhaust pipes announces soon arrival of the Audi S5 Cabrio like a post-horn did in its time. At the present moment, there is only one version assigned for export. A tested version is being prepared for Germany.

Wheel disks at the front axle in 9x21 inch with 255/30ZR21 tyres and in 10,5x21 inch with 295/25ZR21 tyres at the rear axle are produced by Cargraphic also. Use of Bilstein thread suspension B16 PSS10 ensures perfect match of the wheel/tyre combination to the wheel housings.

On demand – and at this performance absolutely advisable – a brake system from Brembo with double 380x32 mm brake disks and 6-piston monoblock saddle for the front axle can be installed. In conclusion, various carbon parts for the external cover and also for the interior should be mentioned.

APS Sportec Audi S5

Sportec, renowned German car tuner based in Switzerland – notably accustomed to tuning Porsche 911s to epic proportions – has now taken a spanner or two to the latest Audi S5 and found an extra 72kW inside the new 3.0-litre supercharged V6. Enhancements made to the engine control unit give the engine completely new mapping which includes an increase in supercharger boost pressure.

The Stage One kit consists of an ECU upgrade and a free flowing air filter element and this is apparently enough to give an extra 97 HP to the car’s engine, taking it from 328 HP and 440 Nm to an amazing 425 HP at 6,640 rpm and 520 Nm of torque, almost like the Audi RS5.

So instead of 328 bhp at 6000 rpm standard you get 425 bhp at 6640 rpm, while the stock car’s 440 Nm (325 lb.ft) is now upgraded to 520 Nm (379 lb.ft) at 4250 rpm as well. They say it considerably enhances the in-gear and fast cruising performance of the car, in keeping with its luxury GT credentials, but don’t expect much as the acceleration time from 0 to 60 mph is reduced by 0.5 seconds and the top speed is still limited to 155 mph.

The performance figures of the Sportec Audi S5 say it can jump from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, but the top speed is till limited to 155 mph. The Sportec Audi S5 price is 1950.00 GBP.

Press Release

APS of Brackley, UK importer for the Swiss Sportec range of exclusive vehicle enhancements, is delighted to announce a new performance upgrade for the 2009 onward models of the Audi S5 quattro coupe and cabriolet using the 3.0-litre supercharged, V6, TFSI powerplant.

Labelled the ‘Stage One’ upgrade, Sportec’s S5 performance enhancement package consists of a free flowing air filter element and a carefully developed ECU remap. In combination this has a dramatic effect on the power characteristics of the supercharged 2995cc Audi engine, with peak power increasing from 328 bhp at 6000 rpm to 425 bhp at 6640 rpm, a significant gain of 97 bhp.

Similarly, Sportec’s Stage One upgrade delivers a prodigious increase in torque output on the Audi S5, producing a maximum of 520 Nm (379 lb.ft) at 4250 rpm, compared to peak figure of 440 Nm (325 lb.ft) from the factory.

Careful development by Sportec’s technicians ensures that over 80% of the maximum torque output is available from 2750 to 6250 rpm, which both perfectly suits the characteristics of the car’s 7-speed S-Tronic transmission and highlights the user-friendliness of the conversion.

The additional power and torque output realised by the Sportec Stage One upgraded Audi S5 considerably enhances the in-gear and fast cruising performance of the car, in keeping with its luxury GT credentials. However, when exercised to the full, it reduces the 0-62 mph (100 kmh) by 0.5 seconds to 4.6 seconds, while top speed is limited at 155 mph for safety reasons.

Suitable for coupe and cabriolet models of the 3.0-litre TFSI supercharged Audi S5, the Sportec Stage One upgrade is available now from APS Sportec priced at £1950.00 fitted including VAT.

Audi R8 Blackbird

Pictures and video of the super cool Audi R8 Blackbird car. Back in the 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, the world's two superpowers were locked in a technology race to develop their military capabilities fastest. Out of this came the idea of 'stealth' aircraft like the legendary SR-71 Blackbird, which provided the inspiration for this highly-modified Audi R8 from New York.

Like its winged counterpart, the Audi R8 ‘Blackbird’ features a sleek design, stunning performance and a host of stealthy electronic countermeasures for the road. Built by New York-based 'Ai Designs', the car has enough gadgets to give a military vehicle a run for its money, including a recently installed Passport 9500ci - an integrated laser detection and laser shifting unit. According to the company that builds the unit, Escort, speeding tickets will be a thing of the past thanks to the Passport's ability to absorb a laser signal and send a scrambled signal back to the source.

A built-in iPhone is used to check speed trap locations on the Internet and constantly update the car's library of red-light cameras and speed cameras, making it difficult for even the most ham fisted drivers to be caught by the constabulary.

With all of that stealth technology tucked underneath the car's dashboard, the R8 Blackbird exterior is the only giveaway that there’s something very special lurking within its sheet metal. Custom 20in forged wheels in a glossy black color sit at each corner, while the brake hats, rotors and exhaust tips are all coated in a flat black paint scheme. Finally, a Capristo sports exhaust with computer controlled valves allows the driver to make the R8 Blackbird as loud or quiet as they desire.
